The Interreg Italy-Malta 2021-2027 programme marks a significant step in cross-border maritime cooperation aimed at strengthening the socio-economic fabric between Sicily and Malta. This initiative, based on more than a decade of collaboration, represents the latest step in a series of successful European territorial cooperation projects.
A new cycle of opportunities with the Interreg Programme
The programme starts with a budget of EUR 57.604 million, financed largely by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund. This budget signals a robust commitment to the shared objectives of the two regions, with 80% co-financing from the EU.
Priorities and Projects
The first call of the Interreg Italy-Malta programme, for a total of EUR 27.669 million, sets the tone for ambitious future goals. The focus is spread over four strategic axes:
Research and Innovation: With EUR 9.386 million allocated, this priority aims to strengthen research capacities and introduce advanced technologies, leading the region towards smart specialisation.
Environmental Sustainability: A substantial part, EUR 13.241 million, is dedicated to preserving nature, adapting to climate change and moving towards a circular economy.
Culture and Sustainable Tourism: Recognising the role of culture and tourism in socio-economic development, the programme allocates EUR 1.976 million to strengthen these sectors.
Improving Governance: EUR 3.043 million is reserved for improving the efficiency of cooperation between Italy and Malta, with a specific focus on better governance.

This programme is not just about funding; it is about modelling the future. The previous cycle (2014-2020) demonstrated remarkable results with more than EUR 51 million invested, leading to impactful projects in various fields. Expectations for the 2021-2027 cycle are high, with the aim of not only continuing this legacy but also introducing innovative approaches and expanding the partnership network.

A central ambition of the programme is to expand the partnership base. In doing so, it aims to include a diverse range of stakeholders, from local authorities to non-governmental organisations, promoting a more inclusive and collaborative approach to regional development.
